Columbus REALTORS® is proud to announce that both the Gahanna Area and Greater Dublin Realty associations were awarded Weiler grants in honor of their 2019 REALTOR® Care Day projects.
REALTOR® Care Day is an annual day of service to the communities in which REALTORS® live, work and raise families.
Since its inception in 2005, REALTOR® Care Day has resulted in almost $559,000 re-invested into our communities. This year, on June 5, 2019, over $60,000 was invested by 24 groups tackling 41 REALTOR® Care Day community service projects all over central Ohio.
REALTOR® Care Day is funded through the Columbus REALTORS® Foundation. Area Realty Associations are offered matching funds (up to $500 each) to help with their community service efforts for this event. Additional assistance is received from many individuals and companies through in-kind donations of money, goods and services.
The REALTOR® Care Day Weiler Grant was established in 2014 to recognize Area Realty & Trade Association projects that exemplify the principles of the event which is to provide community service to those in need. The grant was named for Skip Weiler, founder of REALTOR® Care Day. Both area realty associations will receive an additional $500 in funding which they may use towards their 2020 REALTOR® Care Day projects.
The Gahanna Area Realty Association chose a deserving homeowner recommended by GRIN (Gahanna Residents in Need) who is taking care of her grandchildren after the death of her daughter and son.
“There were so many that showed up to work, which was wonderful as the property was large and the tasks numerous,” said Rene Lanthron, 2019 President of the Gahanna Area Realty Association. “With all the help, we were able to accomplish all that we planned.”
In one day, the group was able to repair the front porch support pillars, remove five tons of debris, power wash the home, fix the fire pit, replace a window, repair/paint trim and porch, tidy the landscaping, mulch, and plant a garden.
“The owner was so sweet and appreciative,” added Lanthron. “But the best part of the day was the look on her face when we finished the garden area where she’ll place memorial stones for her lost daughter and son.”

The Greater Dublin Realty Association chose to help a senior couple recommended by Dublin Bridges. The husband suffers from dementia, but still enjoys sitting outside and the wife was unable to keep up the yard.
“We were planning to fix/paint trim, clean up debris, and make improvements to the landscape,” said Bob McCarthy, REALTOR® Care Day coordinator for the Dublin group. “But once got involved, we found it to be far more than expected.”
The deck was rotted and sloped toward the house, which resulted in water damage and, as it turned out, termite infestation. The home was treated, and a complete interior wall replaced. The deck was removed and rebuilt, and a white picket fence installed.
“Thanks to REALTOR® Care Day and our REALTOR® partners, including Jacob Hemlinger with 614 Mortgage, Remedy Express, and Junk Luggers, we were able to take care of some serious problems,” added McCarthy. “Now they can safely enjoy their deck and backyard again.”
