See the need, take the lead

I am honored and excited to represent our Association as President in 2018. I genuinely look forward to getting to know many of you better, working closely with our excellent staff and representing central Ohio REALTORS®.

 

I shared at the Presidents’ Ball my theme for this year, See the need, take the lead. I hope my theme offers insight on my belief in empowering individuals to do exceptional work through collaboration and communication. In the words of Henry Ford, “If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.”

 

We are professionals, advisors, and advocates. Together we will See the need, take the lead, focus our collective talents on making positive changes in our industry. The benefits to our colleagues, our communities, and our industry will be significant. 

 

Our 2017-2019 Strategic Plan outlines five goals for Columbus REALTORS®:

Goal 1: Raise member professionalism

Goal 2: Increase member participation

Goal 3: Increase Broker/Manager Involvement

Goal 4: Strengthen private property rights in central Ohio (Advocacy)

Goal 5: Promote the Mission of the MLS Corporation and its Divisions

 

Although all the of the goals of the Association’s Strategic Plan are important, professionalism is a major component and the first of the five listed goals. “See the need, take the lead” will come to life when Columbus REALTORS® take the lead focusing on increasing member professionalism. I asked two respected, seasoned professionals, Barbara Lach and Daphne Hawk Stevens, to co-chair the Raising the Bar Presidential Advisory Group. This special committee will identify methods to increase member commitment to and participation in best ethical practices and professional conduct for the benefit of the real estate industry and the public.

 

Additionally, I ask all our members to take the lead and consider becoming a mentor. There is no better way to personally enhance yourself than to become a mentor and role model. We often find that mentors may improve their skills set therefore strengthening the best version of themselves while helping others develop their business savvy.

 

Recognizing the necessity for a mentorship program, Columbus REALTORS® created a dynamic course called the Certified Real Estate Mentor (CREM) designation. This designation focuses on ensuring that knowledge, experience, and wisdom are passed down from generation to generation.

 

As the great writer Robert Louis Stevenson said, “Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds that you plant.” Columbus REALTORS® is doing a fantastic job with members learning to be better mentors. Our association is improving our industry by planting the seeds with 31 CREM designees already. 

 

Thirty plus years ago, a Westerville real estate firm hired me as a young girl to work as their weekend receptionist. Keeping that job throughout high school and college, I spent most breaks working and learning while being mentored by many knowledgeable REALTORS®. I am grateful for the incredible mentors who took time in shaping my life and are still available for me to call.

 

Helen Keller is often quoted, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”
