May/June 2003 President's Perspective

Welcome Fayette County!

We want to extend a warm CBR welcome to the folks from the Fayette County who have chosen to become part of the CBR family.  On January 27, 2003, the Board of Directors of the Fayette County Board of REALTORS®, representing over 60 members, voted to join the Columbus Board of REALTORS® with a target completion date of April 1.

On April 21, twenty-one Fayette County REALTORS® visited with us here at our CBR offices for lunch, a brief CBR orientation and tour of the CBR Member Service Headquarters.

To ensure representation of Fayette County issues, Fayette County REALTORS® are being appointed to several strategic CBR committees including the Board of Directors.  There is also discussion on bringing a special continuing education class to a location in Fayette County.

Fayette County REALTORS® and affiliates will continue to meet regularly as the Fayette County Area Realty Association.  Following is their meeting/contact information:
President: Ronda Turner, ERA Martin & Associates (740) 636-0393; Ronda_Turner45123@yahoo.com; Meetings: Last Wednesday, 9:00 a.m.; Location: To be determined
Tour Director: Lisa Satterfield - (740) 572-0115

And again, on behalf of the Columbus Board, welcome!

‘Rekindling our Fire’

I have been a REALTOR® for over 26 years. In that time, I would like to think that I have seen just about all there is to see in the way of residential transactions. Sometimes I must admit that it is difficult to “fire” myself up to meet each day. I have found that many times, I have had to “re-invent” myself in order to stay competitive in the game. Sometimes, the life of a REALTOR® seems to be nothing but BUSINESS!!!

One way I have found to rekindle my spirit is to remember past positive experiences. I would like to share a couple with you...

About ten years ago, it was my privilege to work with a first time buyer -- a super guy and also a bouncer at a local pub. He was a very large American indeed!!!

We found the right home and secured a tremendous financing package which enabled him to reconstruct part of the home.  All went well at the closing.

After the closing, the seller, the title agent, the buyer and I shot the breeze for about fifteen minutes at which time the buyer asked me when he would actually own the home. I looked at my watch and I happily answered that he had indeed owned the home for at least the last fifteen minutes.

With that answer, he literally began to tear up. He explained that no one in his family had ever owned a home before and that he obviously could not contain his emotions. Nor could the rest of us at the table. Here was a very large man totally taken aback by the fact that he was now part of the great American dream!!! Talk about making an ordinary closing into a very special and gratifying event!!! He still lives in the home to this day.

Next, again it was my privilege to work with a husband and wife who were immigrants from Eastern Europe. They were the most polite couple I have ever worked with in my life. After each showing, they thanked me profusely for taking my time to assist them.

Every time I “did my job” they thought that it was extraordinary. Believe me, I was doing nothing special at all...at least as I saw it. At the closing, you never saw such beaming faces. They were ecstatic that they were now property owners in their new country. They were Americans!!! By the way, they now have a four month old son and he really is an All American boy.

I bring you these two examples not because I did anything special ( I know for a fact that you all have equal to or better than stories of your own) but because good people like these motivate me through all the times when maybe life gets a little too ‘business like’.

We all need to remember that what we do is very special. We help people to realize their dreams. We help people to begin to create memories. We must never forget that what we do brings tremendous joy and happiness to so many. Not everyone in this world will ever be able to have the American dream. In many ways, we are the keepers of that dream.

Have you seen your NEW Member Service Center?!

as was promised, your CBR Member Service Center (store) underwent major renovation this spring.  Not only did we get new furniture and a new look, we did some spring cleaning in the process.  Many items which were not selling were removed and, in their place, we have MANY new and exciting items for sale.

The Grand Re-Opening is the week of May 5.  Please stop by and see what’s new!
