News & Information : In Contract Magazine : Past Issues : May/June 2002 - CORPAC Committee May/June 2002 - CORPAC CommitteeYour CORPAC Fundraising Committee
When Lynda Long asked me to co-chair CORPAC with Lynne Wittman I just figured it was my “turn in the barrel.” I firmly believe what goes around comes around. We have to give back some of our time and money to the industry that has been so good to many of us. CORPAC & RPAC constitute a huge effort from many people. From NAR to Bob Fletcher, Don Freels and the rest of the Ohio Association staff on a state level, the process works. I watched as the OAR C/I Committee had an idea to address the issue of out of state C/I brokers coming to Ohio and doing transactions in our state. And now there is a new law in Ohio (the first state to adopt such a law) that our National Association is using as a model for other states, to make our licenses more portable for multi-state C/I transactions. Larry Metzger devotes much time and effort to managing the government process. You can't just show up at City Council meetings when you have a problem with a rejected annexation or zoning. You have to be involved day in and day out. Many of CORPAC's greatest accomplishments you never hear about because they are the bad laws and dumb ideas that never see the light of day. Term limits is having a musical chairs-like effect on many public positions. There are many unqualified candidates that are running for some offices just because they need a job. That makes our own CORPAC Governing Board more vital than ever. We actually interview these unknown candidates and get their views on real estate and private property rights. You have to support the good office holders every year, even when they are not up for reelection. The process gives us a real chance to make our industry better. We now have people in the Ohio Department of Commerce who want to make the system more user-friendly for both Realtors® and the consumers. Governmental entities on all levels have an increasing need for more tax dollars. Beyond the basic public services that we use every day, most of us never see any benefit from the ever-increasing tax burden. The world and our business is changing at a faster pace every day. The only thing we can count on is change. We, as individual Realtors®, cannot devote the significant amount of time and money it takes to make a difference when these changes occur. But, there is strength in numbers. Monitoring and managing these dynamic changes that take place on a daily basis is the biggest benefit we get from CORPAC. You can make a difference by supporting CORPAC. Donating an auction item, attending the auction and spending some $$$$ are all fun ways to support CORPAC. For both new Realtors® and the veterans that may never have been to the auction, it really is a lot of FUN. Mark your calendars for Tuesday, May 21st at Villa Milano. I have heard many Realtors® ask, “What is CORPAC, and why should I contribute? Before answering, I would ask them just a few questions in return. Does the deductibility of mortgage interest save you any money on your taxes? Have the higher limits for FHA loans increased your commissions? Would the city tax on capital gains have cost you any money? And then I'll ask one final question. Who's looking out for you when those in government want to change these or pass other laws that will affect your livelihood? What CORPAC Is And, through our sharing of contributions received with RPAC-Ohio and NAR, we also support those candidates who favor private property rights, such as homeownership, mortgage interest tax deductions, minimal capital gains tax on property sales and many other important issues on the state and national level. With the Ohio Association of Realtors® and National Association of Realtors® we have professional lobbyists who are instrumental in promoting legislation that is friendly to our industry and defeating legislation that is not. Why All CBR Members Should Be Involved There are several ways Realtors® can help keep our business profitable and viable for all. • Make your personal voluntary contribution to CORPAC. Easiest is to include $20 with your CBR membership dues payment. • Attend and contribute at the annual CORPAC auction on Tuesday, May 21st at the Villa Milano. You can call the board office or talk to any of the committee members listed below about getting tickets or about donating items for auction. • Participate in the annual golf outing on Thursday, September 5th at Foxfire Golf Course. Information about this year's golf outing is available at the board office. All Realtors® have a stake in the success of our political action committee. If each member voluntarily contributed only $20 with their dues each year, we would raise our $100,000 goal, and would raise more than any other Realtor® board in Ohio. Please make your contribution to CORPAC for 2002. It is a must, now more than ever, to have strong legislative presence to protect our business in Washington D.C., in Ohio's State House and in our local government. Real estate is our business; let's keep it a successful one.
