Member Services : Awards Programs : Spotlight on Community Service : Kenneth J. Brittman, Jr., RE/MAX Associates Realty Kenneth J. Brittman, Jr., RE/MAX Associates RealtyKenneth was a chaperone for a group of high school students from his church who participated in the Spring 2007 tour of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU).This tour took them to North Carolina A&T, Winston-Salem State, North Carolina Central, South Carolina State, Claflin University and Bennett College for Women. HBCUs were established before 1964 with the intention of serving the African American community. Males interested in a teaching career can get a free 4-year education at an HBCU. There are more than 100 HBCUs in the United States, and they come in all types and sizes, can be public or private, and come in both the two-year and four-year variety. HBCUs are located in 20 states,Washington, D.C., and the Virgin Islands, in both urban and rural areas. Kenneth says, "My commitment to getting involved in this project was to give students an opportunity to experience a piece of their history by introducing them to college life at HBCUs. I was most impressed by Claflin University and their brand new $3,000,000, 14,200 sq ft church in the middle of the campus. We cannot be with our children all the time, but God can and that is very comforting when your children may be going through all of the pressures that college and a big campus can bring. I'm also a strong believer in "Knowledge is power" and that education is key to being productive citizens in America." |
