Computer Data Security

Submitted by Milt Lustnauer

(May 2006) The guest presenter at the March Technology Committee meeting on March 28 was Al Brehl, President of CM IT Solutions. Al spoke about computer data security. He provided information outlining key terms including all forms of malware, phishing and pharming, and various scams. An important emphasis was placed on physical protection of the computer - independent of technology. Care should be taken to avoid leaving computers, cell phones or PDAs in view in a locked car. Care should also be taken to avoid moving those devices to a trunk while in full view of others. Put things in the trunk when you are leaving an appointment so that you don't have to expose your plan when you arrive at a restaurant or other location where you plan to meet next.

Physical also involves using passwords, backing up data to avoid loss due to natural disaster, or loss due to disgruntled employees.

Al also reported that cyber crime has now grown larger than the drug trade in cost and scope. This includes identity theft and the cost of companies working on solutions to both identification as well as authentication.

Questions from the technology committee included clarification of wireless security, use of public access points like Panera's, proper use of antivirus and firewalls, and other common configuration issues faced by home users and businesses.

Information provided by Al included a glossary of terms, guidance on good creation and maintenance of passwords, and a series of FAQ related to data security.
