National Homeownership Month

It takes a REALTOR®

The Columbus Board of REALTORS® is joining President Bush, Mayor Coleman, and the Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) in a celebration of National Homeownership Month this June.

For the fifth consecutive year, President Bush has designated the month of June as a time to promote the power of homeownership and to increase the ranks of homeowners?especially among minorities. The White House is challenging public and private entities to work together to boost minority homeownership by 5.5 million homeowners by 2010.

Our association is one-thousand percent behind this important nationwide initiative. As REALTORS® unlocking doors to homeownership is our business, and National Homeownership Month is a good time to raise awareness about the important social, economic and personal benefits of this cornerstone of the American Dream.

For millions of individuals and families, the American Dream starts with owning a home. When families move into a home of their own, they gain independence and confidence, and their faith in the future grows. The spread of ownership and opportunity helps give our citizens a vital stake in the future of America and the chance to realize the great promise of our country.

From the earliest days of our Nation, homeownership has embodied the core American values of individual freedom, personal responsibility, and self-reliance. A home provides children with a safe environment in which to grow and learn. A home is also a tangible asset that provides owners with borrowing power and allows our citizens to build wealth that they can pass on to their children and grandchildren.

2006 Affordable Housing Committee Report

NAR Research: Homeownership Equals the Good Life

For years, summaries of academic research have been trickling into the consumer press about the social benefits of homeownership. Now, NAR has completed a systematic review of this research and finds a strong case for public policies that promote homeownership as an unbeatable way to provide the kind of stable housing that leads to a wide variety of household benefits and, by extension, social benefits for the community. Among those benefits:

  • Higher educational performance and better behavior of children
  • Lower community crime rates
  • Lessened welfare dependency among households
  • More household participation in civic affairs
  • Better household health

The benefits of homeownership extend to our communities. Families who own their own homes have a strong interest in maintaining the value of their investments, the safety of their neighborhoods, and the quality of their schools. Homeownership is also a bedrock of the

American economy, helping to increase jobs, boost demand for goods and services, and build prosperity.

The word `home' means security, comfort, family, happiness and so much more to people. It's our business to bring people to homes of their own. But, we don't just sell houses, we sell neighborhoods, and we help to make our communities strong, great places to live.

Creating a better America starts right here in Central Ohio. When we make our community strong, we're doing something positive for the entire nation.
