2005 Governmental Affairs Committee Report

When it comes to our legislative efforts - the times, they are a changing!

Jim Case, Chair
Governmental Affairs Committee

The political efforts of our association begin and end each year with the idea of protecting the American Dream of home ownership and the rights of membership to conduct their business with as little government involvement as possible.

To that end, CEO Larry Metzger, Officers, committee chairs and many members have spent endless hours over the last twenty years lobbying and building relationships with Columbus area congressional state and local government officials.

Our efforts and the people and issues that we support go way beyond party lines. This great effort has resulted in making the Columbus Board of REALTORS® the most respected and powerful trade association in Central Ohio.

In the past, much of our time has been focused in the downtown area - Columbus City Hall, Franklin County Courthouse and the Ohio Statehouse. But the times, they are changing.

For example, term limits have made the seats to the Ohio House and Senate a revolving door, and as Central Ohio grows, so do the MLS boundaries. The once sleepy little townships, suburban cities, towns and villages find themselves in the middle of overwhelming growth. Their government officials are learning while under fire. Many of their decisions could have serious consequences on how we do business and negatively affect the American Dream of Home Ownership.

There is still time and we have plenty of room for new members on the governmental affairs committee. We are forming a sub-committee that will focus on township trustees, suburban, and rural government entities.

We need to have REALTOR® members building relationships with these officials so that we can monitor and respond if necessary to the decisions they might make that would be a detriment to buying a selling real estate.

Of critical concern right now is the Ohio budget before the Senate. Several of the proposals will negatively affect real estate. Therefore we need you to contact your Ohio Senator today and voice your concerns.

We also need your help by supporting CORPAC every chance you get! This year's auction will start at 5:30p.m. May 26th at the Hyatt Regency downtown, followed by the ever popular Golf outing at Fox Fire golf club September 1st.

Whether it is attending a CORPAC event, contributing to CORPAC, joining the Governmental Affairs Committee and/or contacting your representative when asked, your involvement is essential to the continued success of our industry.
