DSCC

What is DSCC?

The Defense Supply Center Columbus (DSCC), located on Broad Street in Whitehall, houses 22 federal government organizations, including three primary agencies of the U.S. Department of Defense.

1. Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) _ The DLA at DSCC is one of the largest suppliers of weapons systems spare parts, manages repair parts and supplies for land, maritime, and missile systems, including related electronic components. The $2.8 billion in sales coordinated through DLA Columbus _ one of four such centers _ represents 32 percent of the DoD total. The 1.6 million items managed represent nearly half of all defense items.

2. Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) - DFAS is the accounting service provider for the DoD and its agencies, including the other agencies housed at DSCC. DFAS Columbus _ one of five such centers in the U.S. _ disburses one third of the DoD budget, including payments on invoices of government contractors and military and civilian travel reimbursements.

3. Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) _ The plans, develops, operates and supports communication and information systems for the DoD and its agencies, including DLA and DFAS. DISA Columbus _ one of 16 sites nationally _ provides around-the-clock support for DoD's largest Internet network and the secure global military grade messaging system.

History of DSCC

In 1918, near the end of World War 1, the U.S. Army purchased the 281 acres of swamp land and farm land as it provided convenient access to three major railroad lines.

During WWII the Center became the largest military supply installation in the world. In December 1942, an additional 295 acres were purchased. With more than 10,000 civilian employees, it played a large part in the overall war effort. Some of the warehouses were turned into secured barracks to house prisoners of war.

The installations operational activities were assigned to the U.S. Army Supply and Maintenance Command in July 1962. The following year, it became the Defense Construction Supply Center under what is presently known as the Defense Logistics Agency. In January 1996, DSCC received its fourteenth and current name, the Defense Supply Center Columbus.

Economic Impact of DSCC

  • If the combined activities of DSCC were a stand-alone business, its 6,160 jobs would rank it as the 12th largest employer in Greater Columbus. The work force is diverse with twice the state average for certain minority groups.
  • DSCC's employment is greater than the local employment of Kroger (5,952), Wendy's International (4,900), Huntington (3,478), American Electric Power (3,794), Battelle (2,035), or Cardinal Health (1,500).
  • DSCC provides employment to workers from at least 66 cities and villages in all seven counties of Greater Columbus. Workers living outside of Greater Columbus represent 12 percent of total employment; DSCC draws its workforce from 40 Ohio counties.
  • The $62,000 average wage at DSCC is 83 percent higher than the Columbus MSA average ($33,800) and 86 percent higher than that of the Whitehall-area 43213 ZIP code ($33,300).
  • The $382 million annual payroll is 42 percent of the payroll of all private-sector companies in the 43213 ZIP code. These high wages are due to the high skill level of DSCC jobs: 72 percent of installation employees have attended college _ a proportion 31 percent higher than the regional average.
  • DSCC generates $21.6 million annually in state and city taxes, including $7.5 million in City of Whitehall income taxes _ 45.5 percent of the city's total receipts in 2003 _ and $1 million in City of Columbus income taxes.
  • DSCC's 1.4 million square feet is comparable to the 1.5 million square feet of retail space at Polaris and Easton. If it were a private office park, its 550 acres would rank it the second largest office park in Greater Columbus.
