Issues : NAR Ethics Requirement

NAR Ethics Requirement

The NAR Quadrennial "Code of Ethics" Education Requirement

Due December 31, 2004

In the year 2000, NAR mandated that all REALTORS® take a code of ethics course every four years.  After mandating this requirement, NAR announced that the local board of REALTORS® would have the authority to accept which ethics courses would satisfy the requirement.

Since Ohio is one of the few states that already has a required ethics class to be taken by all licensees every three years, the Columbus Board of REALTORS® has decided to accept any ethics course that has been approved for continuing education credit by the Ohio Division of Real Estate & Professional Licensing.

Therefore, if a REALTOR® has taken their state ethics required class with either the Ohio Association of REALTORS® or the Columbus Board of REALTORS®, you have fulfilled your obligation and do not need to submit proof to the Columbus Board of REALTORS®

However, if you have taken your state ethics required class at another institution or school (in the last four years), then we ask that CBR members submit a copy of the certificate you received for attending that class to the Columbus Board of REALTORS®.  The copy of the certificate can be faxed to CBR, attn: Lucy Hadley, Fax: 614-475-4091.  The certificate can also be mailed to CBR, Attn: Lucy Hadley, 2700 Airport Dr., Columbus, OH 43219.

NAR's on-line Ethics course
If you have taken NAR's on-line Ethics course, you have fulfilled your obligation and do not need to submit further proof to CBR.

For new agents
CBR's New Member Orientation includes a class on Ethics which fulfills the NAR requirement.  So, if you have taken (or intend to take) our New Member Orientation, you need do nothing further.

The state mandated 10-Hour Post Licensing course also includes a class on Ethics which fulfills the NAR requirement.  So, if you have taken (or intend to take) the 10-Hour Post Licensing course, you will meet the NAR requirement.  However, if you take the 10-hour Post Licensing course from a school or institution other than from the Ohio Association of REALTORS®, then you must submit a copy of the certificate to the Columbus Board of REALTORS®, either by faxing a copy to CBR, attn: Lucy Hadley, Fax: 614-475-4091 or by mail to CBR, Attn: Lucy Hadley, 2700 Airport Dr., Columbus, OH 43219.

There has been much confusion about this NAR requirement.  We hope this helps alleviate some of the confusion.

If you have additional questions about this requirement, please click here to email Lucy Hadley, Director of Professional Development for the Columbus Board of REALTORS®.
