2004 Communication Committee Report

Communication Committee sponsoring Safety Class & Investment Seminar

Rosalyn Miller, Chair
Communication Committee

Safety Class

As real estate professionals who come in contact with complete strangers on a daily basis, the issue of personal safety is relevant to each one of us.  It’s a concern that has grown considerably in recent years, as we’ve heard of fellow REALTORS® in different states who have come to harm during the course of doing business.

When you are holding an open house, are you mentally prepared to deal with a personal safety emergency?  When you receive a call from a buyer whom you haven’t yet met, and they want to see a vacant property 5 miles out in the country…..what should you do?

The Communication Committee is sponsoring a seminar dealing with personal safety issues as it relates to a day in the life of a REALTOR®.  The 3-hour class is approved for continuing education and will be taught by two very qualified individuals.  Al Cook is a police trainer for the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department and Rick Rossetter is a male nurse.  Both are skilled in martial arts.

These are the same two men who presented the first safety seminar our committee hosted last year.  I was a participant in that class and am highly recommending it for any REALTOR®.  During their presentation, I learned:

  • There are 28 bones in the human foot.  Slamming your foot down on top of your attacker’s foot – wherever you can – will break any number of bones so they cannot run after you.
  • There is a tender spot on the underside of your upper arm which, when pinched renders your attackers arm momentarily unusable.
  • Slapping both your hands hard over your attackers ears will give them a brief concussion

These are just a few of things I learned last year.  The focus of the seminar is two-fold.  First, and most important, is prevention. The safest way to survive an attack is to not be in that situation in the first place.  But, if you do find yourself ‘under attack’ – render them immobile long enough to get away.

Although ‘render them immobile’ sounds rather nice, some of the methods available to us to hurt, maim and damage another person are downright gory.  But, according to Al and Rick, anything is acceptable when it’s your life versus theirs!  And they’re right!!!

This Safety Seminar will be held on October 21, during our Sales Associates Day at Aladdin Shriner’s Complex.  The class is one of two class choices included in the cost of your Sales Associates Day ticket which you can purchase online or by calling 475-4000.  Come early as seating is limited.

Investment Seminar

Also, coming on November 4, we will again offer our very popular First Time Investor’s Seminar. It will be held from 7-9 at the CBR building on Airport Drive.

Topics addressed will include HUD properties, Small property investments, Financing, and Investment properties & taxes, what you should know.

If you have clients who are first time investors, this is an excellent educational opportunity for them, as well as for REALTORS® who are fairly new to investments. The content of this seminar covers just the basics of real estate investing.

The committee is working on follow up seminar which will take investing to the next level for those beyond the beginner stage or who have taken our 1st level seminar.  Watch for this new seminar in the spring of 2005!

Stay safe, and I hope to see you on October 21st  and November 4th!
