What's Your Goal in Real Estate?
Skip Weiler, 2004 President
A number of years ago I was in class getting my CRB designation and we broke out into small groups to discuss what our goals and objectives were in working with clients. I stated that my goal was to help my client, whether it was to help buy, sell or lease commercial real estate. An individual in the class (who is not from Columbus) suggested that I should be a social worker and not in real estate. They claimed that, if my goal was just to help people, that I should find a career with one of the social agencies and not focus on commercial real estate.
That conversation was over 15 years ago and I’ve never forgotten that experience. My goal today is the same as it was that day of the conference, namely to help my clients. I believe that is why I have found some success. My goal is not to help myself, nor to increase my financial statement (not that I mind doing either). By “helping my clients” my goal/objective/focus is that I provide the service my client desires. Clients understand and know when their agent is serving their needs. To emphasize the point, I tell the agents in my office to treat their clients as they would treat their own grandmother. By looking out only for your client’s interest, your client will appreciate and recognize your efforts, return to you for business as well as recommend you to others. I enjoy and appreciate all the economic benefits I receive by representing clients and, by all means, want those to continue. In the class, many years ago, I argued that my intent on helping people should be everyone’s focus and today still feel confident that is the direction all agents should take. I work very, very hard helping my clients and they know and appreciate that. I am hopeful that all of the members of the Columbus Board of REALTORS® have that philosophy and we will continue to be the best Board of REALTORS® in the country! | | Congresswoman Joyce Beatty presented Skip Weiler a proclamation in honor of his election to 2004 President of the Columbus Board of REALTORS®.
