Sue also partners with a special olympian in the golf program. A state wide tournament is held in Cincinnati in September each year to cap off the season. Special Olympics is an international organization currently serving more than 1 million persons with mental retardation in more than 150 countries. It is dedicated to empowering individuals with mental retardation to become physically fit, productive and respected members of society through sports training and competition. Year-round training and competition in 26 Olympic-type summer and winter sports are offered at no charge to children and adults with mental retardation. Sue’s love of children is what motivates her to participate in Special Olympics. “The time I spend with the kids is a retreat from the highly competitive real estate business. These kids are so special. To them the games are not always about winning because, to them, they are all winners. That’s refreshing and quite rewarding.” In addition to Special Olympics, Sue has volunteered as the head coach for the junior high volleyball program for Immaculate Conception School for the past 27 years. |
