CBR's first 3rd generation president
Skip Weiler, 2004 President
It is a thrill and great honor to be your President. This year is going to be a fun, productive year. It’s an especially great honor to be the Columbus Board of REALTORS® first 3rd generation president. My grandfather was the CBR President in 1955, my dad was CBR President in 1976, and now it is my time. My dad, like me, was forty years old when he served as President.
My greatest goal in real estate always has been to be the CBR President. Thanks to all of you who have helped me get here. There are so many people to thank, it would take all of the following pages — for all 10 editions!
I grew up in real estate. Our family would drive around in my dad’s station wagon with my brother and me in back looking at apartment projects and subdivisions. Not sure why. Growing up my ambition was to be a football player or a veterinarian. While attending the Columbus Public Schools, I cut grass and did landscaping, not realizing the grass in front of the apartments and subdivisions was owned by our family and Past President Don Kelley’s family. It never dawned on me that, as fewer lots needed cutting, new homes were being built on recently sold lots.
I went to college in Tucson at The University of Arizona (my parent’s alma mater) and was in the liberal arts college with an undecided major. My favorite class in my junior year was Principles and Practices of Real Estate taught by a practicing broker. It was the easiest and most enjoyable class and, as a result, I selected real estate as a major and switched to the business college.
I graduated in 1985 and, after five months of traveling and playing, my dad asked whether there would be any work in my future.
His advice was, “Find a career you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.”
Two more trips and one month later, I started at The Robert Weiler Company.
My first day started at 8:00 a.m. and ended at 6:00 p.m. At dinner that night with my mom and dad, my dad was saying what a tough day we had. I looked at him and asked, “What did I miss?” We had lots of meetings including one at lunch, but it certainly wasn’t hard work. In fact, other than my landscaping experience, I still haven’t worked a day in my life. I’ll admit to following my dad around the first three months – listening, watching, learning and having fun ever since.
Living in a dynamic city we should all love the opportunities presented in the real estate business.
There are many exciting things that the Board is currently doing and has planned over the next year that I will share with you in upcoming issues of the In Contract magazine.
We are extremely lucky as we have the best leadership team, the best staff and the best members in the country. I am serving you as your President and I am here for you. Please feel free to contact me anytime with any issue, question or idea.
