Education 2003...Year-end Report

Lucy Hadley,
Director of Professional Development

It was another good year for education.  CBR continued to offer the MLS Tempo series of classes which featured three-hours of continuing education credit for each level, Tempo I (Solo), Tempo II (Duet), and Tempo III (Symphony).  Developed by CBR’s resident instructor, Dena Lindsay, these courses have proven to be valuable training and also very popular.  They have been scheduled each month and each session has been “sold out.”  In addition, Dena developed and instructed the hands-on Tarasoft Titan course each month.

In 2003, CBR offered 35  “lecture” classes and issued 2355 certificates for continuing education credit.  CBR offered 49 MLS Tempo classes with approximately 735 members taking the classes.  Some students chose to take the Tempo classes without the continuing education credit; however, over 336 CE certificates were issued for the Tempo classes.  In addition, there were Top Producer classes for both 6i and 7i versions and other computer related classes, such as Pocket Real Estate, Word: Creating Newsletters and Flyers, Tarasoft Titan and Haines Criss+Cross bringing the grand total of certificates issued in 2003 to2826 certificates.

The course offerings ranged from the required courses (Core Law, Civil Rights and the Canons of Ethics) which were offered 3 times each during the year, to various “special interest” type courses such as, “1031 Tax Deferred Exchanges,”  “Digital Camera Course,” “Mold: Legal, Scientific & Practical Considerations,” and “Reaching Immigrant Populations to Create Homeownership.”

There were 2 courses approved for appraiser continuing education credit, as well as, for real estate licensees; “Mold: Legal, Scientific & Practical Considerations in Real Estate” and “Community Development & Commercial Site Selection Symposium.”   The latter course offering was under the auspices of the C/I Education Committee, which had a fulfilling year providing 3-hour courses and the C/I Luncheons, which provided 1-hour of CE credit.  The C/I Education Committee, chaired by Fil Line, worked diligently and systematically to bring the following topics to their fellow agents;  “Downtown Columbus Development Update,” “Environmental Issues,” “Introduction to Commercial Real Estate,” “Advanced Commercial Real Estate,” “1031 Tax-Deferred Exchanges,” “ADA for the C/I Agent,” and  “C/I Core Law.”

The third annual Halloween C/I Luncheon Program proved to be a scary, but fun success.  The topic was a Commercial Real Estate Forecast.  Other C/I Luncheon topics included updates on Port Columbus and Campus Partners, plus “What are the Legal Issues Involving Electronic Signatures,” Property and Zoning Info on the Web,” “Insurance Issues in Commercial Real Estate,” “Commercial Mold Issues,” “Real Estate Tax Valuations and Appeals.”  The course, “Community Development & Commercial Site Selection Symposium” was co-sponsored with CCIIR and CREW (Commercial Real Estate Women) and held at the Hilton Easton to a full house.

In addition, CBR co-sponsored with the Ohio Association of Realtors on several occasions for the ABR (Accredited Buyer Representative) designation courses, and a GRI-100 Equivalency Exam.

Under the chairmanship of Gary Parsons, the Residential Education Committee worked hard to offer some new choices for courses, in addition to the required courses and some other repeated favorites.  Some of the new courses offered included “Reaching Immigrant Populations to Create Homeownership,” “Principles of Real Estate Investing,” “Core Law: Keeping Up with Legal Issues,” “Mold, Mildew & Moisture,” “Complying with the Fair Housing Act,” and “Working with Investors & Investment Property.”  One of the highlights of the year was inviting Danielle Kennedy to Columbus who taught her 3-hour continuing education course, “How to Succeed in Every Real Estate Cycle” in April at an exciting venue, the Arena Grand Theatre.  Danielle Kennedy had not been to Columbus in many years, and she always proves to be a favorite.

It has been a pleasure to offer courses in conjunction with other CBR committees and groups.   The Affordable Housing Committee’s Education Sub-committee worked with the Residential Education Committee to offer  “Train the Trainer: How to Put on a Homebuyer Seminar,” “Down Payment Assistance,” “Home Inspections”, “Bidding on HUD Homes,” and “Affordable Housing Financing Courses, part 1 and part 2.”  The Builder / Realtor Alliance Committee sponsored the Builder/Realtor Roundtable course, “Maximizing New Home Sales 101” in November.

Once again, it was a busy year with many diverse course offerings.  Also, don’t forget to fill out “The Joseph L. MacKinnon Instructor of the Year Award” application.  The application was in the December issue of this magazine and is included as an insert again in this issue. In addition to all of the courses offered, we have had some marvelous instructors who deserve to be recognized.  The deadline for filing the application is February 29.  Click here for the application.
